Understanding Working Memory
Our ability to hold & use information in our minds for a short period.
It helps us work with information without losing track of what we’re doing. Working memory reflects our ability to temporarily hold vital information in our brains for processing - such as dialling a new telephone number or recalling where you might have just placed your phone.
The un-sticky note
Our mental sticky notes are less sticky, and often fall of the wall mid-task.
What was I saying?
Our thoughts are often lost while speaking, leading to unfinished sentences.
On the same page
Reread paragraphs or pages after reading long passages of text.
Calculator, anyone?
Difficulty keeping numbers in our heads long enough to manipulate them.
How rude!
We interrupt in an attempt to process and capture an idea before it’s lost.
Look, squirrel!
The smallest interruption can erase what we were just thinking or doing.
Quick, write it down!
Getting ideas onto paper before we forget taxes our working memory.
"What was I doing?"
Tasks that have multiple steps often lead to forgetting things mid-task.
